Village Prenatal

Have you ever been to a village prenatal? It is not a group prenatal. Can you imagine walking with the wimyn, including the pregnant mothers, to the well or water hole each morning as did your great great grandmother?

Here on The Holyland, we reclaimed this natural wisdom. We gather around the pregnant mothers, no matter where they plan to birth, how they plan to birth or with whom they plan to birth. We gather around them because they carry the future of our species. They are the Holy Mothers. They deserve our best. We meet in the woods and shower them with our finest foods and make them a place of honor. We oil their feet and tell them positive birth stories. Birth stories that are starting to sound like myths and miracles. We hand them the talking stick and we ask them, “What is your Ideal birth?  If you could birth anyway you wish, what would it look like, sound like, be like?” We listen. We support their highest ideal with our listening. We respond, “May it be so! May it be so!” Then we ask, “What is your big fear, worry, concern, doubt, anxiousness or preoccupation?” We listen. We hold the sacred space and we listen. We don’t solve the problem. We don’t let any professional hat crown the head of anyone present. We are wimyn together in this great mystery. We listen. Then we respond, “We are here for you!” We ask permission to touch and listen to baby, to paint the belly and body with mud or color. We laugh and play and talk to baby. “We are your elephant circle!” We tell mother and baby. We make a circle and sing the power songs around her. We bless her. We feast and then we send the left over food home with her.

In this way we are returning birth back to the community. Back into the hands and hearts of those who are the tribe of her belonging. I have taught wimyn around the world how to create their own Prenatal Village. I can now say, “May it be so!” and “We are here for you!” in many languages.

We visit the confined, the sick and we sit with the dying of our community. We do our best to create close circles to support one another in times of great need or great loss. Birth and death are two of the most intense times of need or loss in our journey on this earth. Although we cannot be all things to all people at all time, we often say, “we are here for you”. Each night we light a candle at the foot of the Great Mother global community. Feel us.

If we live long enough, we are called to sit bedside with death. It is a privilege to love so fully and experience so deeply the transcendent journey of another. May the simple and sacred guide you wisely through the journey of first and last breaths – your own and those you love.

Help support our cause!

In our modern world, it is not easy to let what is natural be natural – to honor a knowing that existed before we did. It is even more difficult to preserve it. If it is not preserved within us, it will not be preserved in our families and communities, our policies, our hospitals, our schools or our nations. Most importantly, it becomes lost to our future generations.

Your contribution helps sustain the Holyland and the Spiritual Retreat Centre for Instinctual Living. The Centre offers programs of education and spiritual direction specifically for midwifery, childbirth, wellness therapies, yoga, as well as personal and collective spiritual retreats.

We are a diverse community and I, the founder, am a woodland Mystic of Cherokee ancestry. I place all donations on my altar in Rose Cottage to receive a blessing of return for your happiness, health, wealth and holiness. If you send a donation, please include a love note.

“I promise to live, in ever growing awareness, a life of simplicity; to give more than I take and to quiet the mind to single and simple purpose; to live with the knowledge that I am the temporary guardian of all I possess and to stand ready to share when love calls.”
